What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and to send back on later requests, which is how a site recognises a returning visitor or a continuing session. Cookies set by a party other than the site you are visiting — an analytics or advertising company, for instance — are what allow activity to be followed from one site to another.
This site sets none
Synthworks Online sets no cookies of its own and permits no third party to set cookies through it. There are no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, no session identifiers, no preference cookies, no tracking pixels, no web beacons and no embedded social media widgets. No third-party script of any kind runs on any page of this site.
No cookie is named in this policy because there is none to name. A cookie policy that lists cookies a site does not set is describing someone else's website.
Why there is no consent banner
Consent banners exist so that a site can obtain permission before setting cookies that are not strictly necessary. This site sets nothing at all, so there is nothing to ask permission for, and a banner would be a false statement about what the site does. Its absence is deliberate.
What happens instead
Two things occur when you read a page here, and neither involves storing anything on your device.
- The hosting provider's web server records an ordinary log entry. It contains your IP address, your browser's user agent string, the URL you requested, the date and time, the response code, and the referring address if your browser sent one. This is standard server behaviour, it happens before any page code runs, and it is described in section 2 of the privacy policy, along with how long those logs are kept.
- Your browser fetches the page, one stylesheet and one script, all from this domain. The script handles the menu and the expandable question blocks. It stores nothing, reads nothing and sends nothing anywhere.
This site requests no external resources at all. No fonts are loaded from Google Fonts or any other font service. No libraries are loaded from a content delivery network. No images are loaded from another host — the illustration on this site is drawn with SVG and CSS. Reading a page here causes your browser to contact this domain and nothing else.
No other client-side storage
Beyond cookies, this site uses none of the mechanisms that can hold information in your browser:
- No localStorage and no sessionStorage.
- No IndexedDB and no Web SQL.
- No browser fingerprinting of any kind — no canvas, font or device enumeration, and no script that inspects your browser's characteristics.
- No service worker and no offline cache installed by this site.
You can verify all of this. Open your browser's developer tools on any page here and look at the storage and network panels: storage is empty and every request goes to synthworks.online.
Links that leave this site
Pages here link to vendors and to Australian government bodies. Following any link takes you to a site operated by somebody else, with its own cookie practices, and this policy stops at the boundary. Affiliate links are ordinary links carrying the sponsored and nofollow attributes; no redirect on this domain sits between you and the destination, and no information about you is passed along by this site. The destination site's own cookie notice applies once you arrive.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Nothing on this site requires you to change any setting, but every major browser lets you manage cookies regardless. In Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, the controls sit under privacy or site settings, and they generally let you view stored cookies and site data, delete everything or only data from a specific site, block third-party cookies, block all cookies (which will break sites that rely on them for signing in), and clear stored data automatically when the browser closes. The browser's own help pages give the current steps for its version.
If this ever changes
Should this site ever introduce a cookie, an analytics tool, an advertising tag or any similar technology, three things will happen before it goes live, not afterwards: this page will be updated to describe exactly what is set and why, a compliant consent mechanism will be in place, and the privacy policy will be updated to match. No tracking technology will be deployed on this site ahead of the disclosure that describes it.
